HISTORY

The Evergreen Music Festival (EMF) was founded in 1990, and for many years it has brought the National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) to Evergreen for 2 or 3 concerts every summer. More recently, it has concentrated exclusively on producing Evergreen’s July 4th celebration at Evergreen Lake.

This wonderful orchestra - the NRO, as the Colorado Philharmonic Orchestra, was once headquartered in Evergreen. Longtime residents will remember its members being housed at the Bear’s Inn in Marshdale. Many local families “adopted” individual players for the summer to provide them with a true mountain summer experience as well as some good home cooking. The orchestra’s success was our loss, for it was stolen away by the resort towns. It now resides in Breckenridge, but its annual visit to its old home ground is a great Independence Day tradition. For more than three decades local folks have been treated to the triumphant performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture on July 4. The NRO will perform the overture and medley other popular pieces from 3 to 5 PM.

We have continued the musical tradition of presenting the NRO, the Denver Brass with Celtic Colorado Pipes & Drums and Rocky Mountain Highland Dancers. We partner with Trout Unlimited and the Evergreen Nature Center to provide entertainment for children. This family-oriented celebration has become the highlight of the patriotic July 4th celebration in Evergreen.

In 2007, the Hanna and Al Holt, the long-time force behind EMF, retired. Since then, a new board, drawn from of volunteers from around the community has stepped up to maintain and build on a fine tradition of bringing classical music to Evergreen.
